COVID-19 and its associated restrictions changed the way continuing education courses are presented and offered. In-person instruction has been limited due to the previous and current climate of changing health restrictions as well as providing safe, healthy environments for learning. We are diligently exploring new and current options for remote learning. However, the very nature of competency based training requires “hands-on” learning and instruction in techniques and treatments. Regardless of the level of restrictions in place at the time, all participants should be aware that all in-person training or gatherings will follow strict health protocols that meet or exceed safety measures mandated by the various health departments within Canada and the provinces.

ABOUT

Karen graduated from the University of Manitoba (U of M), School of Medical Rehabilitation in Physical Therapy in 1995.

Early in her career, she developed a special interest in vestibular disorders. This led her to the USA for competency based training from leading vestibular researchers, such as Dr. S. Herdman, Dr. S. Whitney, Dr. R. Clendaniel, Dr. F. Horak, and others.

A desire to further pursue research in vestibular disorders led Karen to the Master of Science (Rehabilitation) degree. Her research was an innovative physiotherapy treatment protocol for those suffering peripheral vestibular disorders.

In 2004, Karen founded Physiotherapy ‘n Balance and the clinic was located at 1835 Corydon Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.  Desiring to concentrate on research and teaching, she retired from the private practice. Physiotherapy ‘n Balance remains active at a new location and under new ownership of Aynsley Fraser Kiernicki since late 2020.

Although Karen retired from actively treating patients to concentrate on teaching vestibular rehab courses specifically for physiotherapists/physical therapists, she is now semi-retired and has returned to treating patients, part-time, at Pure Lifestyle in Winnipeg, MB. Mentoring physiotherapists who have completed the competency vestibular rehab training, speaking engagements, and consulting with other medical professionals in the area of vestibular rehab keep her busy. Additionally, Karen teaches in the Master of Physical Therapy program in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences at the U of M.

In 2016, Karen developed Fundamentals of Vestibular Rehabilitation: A Competency-Based Course and teaches throughout Canada. In addition, an advanced skills course entitled, Vestibular Rehabilitation: Beyond the Fundamentals was developed for those who have completed a competency-based vestibular training course and have been practicing for a minimum of one year.
